The Crime and Policing Act 2026 removed the supervision exemption from the legal definition of Regulated Activity in England. From 1 September 2026, volunteers and coaches in table tennis who work with children under supervision are now treated the same as those who work unsupervised for Disclosure and Barring Service, or DBS, checking purposes.
Table Tennis England, the national governing body, quickly announced an online webinar to explain the change. It will take place on Tuesday, 29 September 2026, from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm UK time. The session will be led by Kyhl Daly, the Designated Safeguarding Officer for Table Tennis England. The main topics are the changes to DBS requirements, what they mean for clubs, volunteers and coaches, and the wider DBS process in table tennis.
The webinar is aimed at Club Welfare Officers, members of club or league committees, regular volunteers who work with children, and coaches. During the session, participants will learn about the change in regulations and how it affects those who may be working with children in a supervised role.
Previously, some volunteers and coaches who worked with children under supervision did not need a DBS check. That no longer applies. The supervision exemption has been removed from the definition of Regulated Activity. Supervised roles are therefore treated in the same way as unsupervised roles.
Table Tennis England reminded clubs that DBS checks are not simply paperwork. They help safeguard children taking part in table tennis and give clubs a clearer picture of whether someone is suitable to work or volunteer with young players. Clubs are encouraged to review their volunteer lists, identify anyone who has not yet completed a DBS check, and prepare to process applications before the next youth session.
