MSI–Worlds 6/6: A Real Signal from Data, or Just Too Small a Sample?

That night, after the final, I did not look at the trophy. My screen stopped at one summary line: 6/6. The last six times the MSI winner moved on to Worlds, the same name also appeared at the top of the year-end tournament. That is not magic. It is a data streak whispering something, and I need to check whether it is telling the truth or simply echoing a sample size that is far too small. This makes using MSI to predict Worlds inherently risky. But since MSI was expanded, the tournament structure has moved closer to Worlds, from format to match intensity. As a result, data from 2026-2026 has started to show a clearer connection. Based on my experience watching MSI tournaments, I do not trust eye-test feelings. I trust asking questions with numbers. Looking at the names JDG, BLG, Gen.G and T1, I see one common trait: they are not only strong on paper. They have a core that can operate in two very different competitive environments. The last six MSI titles all belong to LPL or LCK. No emerging region has broken into this group. That suggests meta reading and roster depth matter more than individual explosiveness. An MSI champion does not automatically become a Worlds contender. They must keep their rhythm when the meta shifts and when opponents have had three more months to decode their style. JDG, BLG, Gen.G and T1 have done that repeatedly. That is why the 6/6 streak is not a small detail. It reflects roster stability, coaching ability and tactical adaptation. But for the same reason, I will not rush to call MSI a faithful mirror of Worlds. I will go against the crowd on one point: the most important thing at MSI is not the champion, but the second- and third-place teams. The champion has the right to enjoy the spotlight. But losing teams are where the hurting numbers live. If a final or semifinal loser still keeps its tactical identity, that team is the real threat at Worlds. Conversely, an MSI title born from a single inspired moment can disappear as soon as the meta turns. Correlation is not causation. Six out of six, three years, while impressive, is still too small a sample to be called a rule. What we see may simply be an overlap between an LPL/LCK dominance era and a timely MSI expansion. If a Western team wins MSI 2026, the 6/6 streak will break immediately. So I choose to read the numbers carefully: 6/6 does not lie, but it is not long enough to become a truth. For MSI 2026, I will track the runners-up and semifinal losers. If they go deep at Worlds, the 6/6 streak will truly mean something. If only the champion repeats its success, that is still a minor story. As always, before discussing victory and defeat, I must ask the numbers first.
